With the first show on February 8th off to a fairly successfully start we decided to try and make this a monthly gig. We wanted to have more than just DJ music during the nights to help bring in more people. We bounced around ideas and decided for our second show in March we will do vendors. We had an amazing local artist GAK selling her works and Seth and I once again DJ’d. Unfortunately it was the worst turn out in Mechanismus history. We had less than 5 people show up. A bit discouraged we decided to up our promotions for the April and May shows. We advertised in the alternative newspaper called “The Sinner”. The advertising was not cheap by any means but it helped. The April and May shows were the most successful shows we had at the Capitol Hill Arts Center. It was at these shows that Matt officially came on board as DJ Omega Brain. We also had belly dancing and fire shows which really help diversify Mechanismus from the other club nights at the time. This formula helped shaped Mechanismus for years to come.
Next came June, our first show with a live band. We spoke with an up and coming local band (now no longer around) called Deathbed Repentance. Aaron was really interested in doing the show as this would be the first time they were to play live and had been garnering lots of interest. The date was set to June 19th and flyers already were printed and passed out when suddenly I learned of the CHAC shutting down on June 18th. There was no prior warning of this. We panicked, scrambled, did what we could but there wasn’t anything in our power that we could do to save the show. Instead I booked June 15th at the CHAC. Deathbed Repentance was unable to do the show on that date so I found Aktion T4 and brought back Bonesaw Seductions for the fire show. I was very confidant the show was going to be great but we only ended up with a dismal turn out. This marked the final show at the CHAC.
Even if the CHAC was not closing down it probably would not have worked out with us in the long run. They had a very small stage making it hard for bigger bands to play on. The sound equipment was in horrible shape and poorly maintained. The bar was divided from the stage so typically people would be at the bar drinking and wouldn’t even be able to see (or hear much for that matter) what was happening in the other room. But probably worst of all the was the shady manager, Dicky. He was such a difficult and frustrating person to work with that now he has become a joke word between Seth and I. He would randomly close the bar to go smoke weed or have drug dealers come to sell. He promised us dates and never followed through. He would double book and if we ever needed him for anything he was never around. So yes, in most ways we were glad to be out of there. But now where do we go? We wanted to keep Mechanismus going and the search for a venue started. Eventually we settled on the Re-Bar. The venue whose claim to fame was 86‘ing Kurt Cobain. I consider the Re-Bar years very similar to the “Roger Moore Years” in the Bond films...
